I dont know if any of you have come across this before but i was given an advent 7017 to repair no recovery discs no nothing .
no problem a lot of us would think just get a copy of xp home use the original CoA on the underside of the machine search out some drivers get the thing all the updates from M$.
the install of xp home sp2 crashed every time no warnings no blue screen just a hang.
so i install xp home sp1a hurrah all on no worries get the drivers all done install sp2 up and running for 5 secs......system hang once again.
restart in safe mode all looks fine start up again 5 secs system hang.
had a hunt around and found this M$ offer a fix for this KB8852626 dont bother it doesnt work.
another hunt around revealed this
replace the update sys in system32/drivers (about 200kb) with the original update sys from sp1 (about 130kb) the original can be found in the uninstall sp2 pack in windows although it is hidden .
i did all of the above and it worked a treat no more hangs running just as it should do.
this may work for other machines with a similar problem
