ping Celtic: mac network problem

Question from a friend:

At a client's site, one of the employees has a personal Mac. He wants to connect it to the company's network (workgroup, not domain), with his employer's consent. Once connected, he can see all the other computers on the LAN, including the file server (Win2k3 SP2), but he cannot access the shared files even though he provides the proper workgroup name and login. He receives a message "cannot find base resource". He's using OS X.3.9 (Panther), and the server has Mac/Unix support installed.

Can anyone point me to what's missing?

Any clues Si?
